Work Experience and Vacation Work in Liverpool

As a student in Liverpool, there are a number of options available to finding work experience to both compliment your studies and provide valuable sources of income. The jobs available can help you to develop the skills all employers look for when recruiting graduates such as team working, decision making, and communication skills.

Below is information on just some of the options available to students for finding employment during their studies. For more exhaustive information, you should contact your University Careers Service (see below):
Liverpool John Moores University University of Liverpool Liverpool Hope University

Business Bridge
Now in its 10th year, Business Bridge is a service operated across the three Liverpool Universities. Its main aim is to find students paid part-time work experience projects in local businesses. The service remains open during the vacation periods, when there is the possibility of finding full-time placements. Further information on the latest vacancies and how to get involved can be found on the website: www.business-bridge.org.uk.

PULSE

PULSE is open to current students and recent graduates of the University of Liverpool, though during the summer vacation offers its service to other university students returning to the area. PULSE is a job information service - like a Job Centre. It finds and advertises a wide range of temporary, casual and part-time jobs from a host of local companies. Full time jobs are available during vacation periods. Pulse Web Site

SAGO
North West Student & Graduate Online provides details of Sandwich placement opportunities and vacation work in the North West produced by SAGO. The site also has details of some graduate vacancies. www.nwstudentandgraduate.ac.uk

Mersey Workplace
Provides an extensive listing of local vacancies at all levels and in all sectors. www.merseyworkplace.com

STEP
STEP is a UK-wide programme offering second or penultimate-year undergraduates work in small and medium-sized companies or community organisations. This allows students the opportunity to gain some valuable work experience, whilst helping the organisation to deal with a business problem. Most STEP projects run for 8 weeks in the summer, though there are opportunities for part-time or industrial year placements. www.secureyoursuccess.co.uk

Job Centre Plus
Jobcentre Plus, the government-run employment and support service, can help students find suitable part-time, weekend and evening work to fit around lecture commitments. You can search vacancies and find your local Jobcentre Plus office online at: www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk

If you are returning to the area for the vacation period and in need of a job, most Job Shops in the UK participate in “Vacation Link” - a service operated by the National Association of Student Employment Services (NASES) allowing students from other institutions to use their services. For further details, just click on the Vacation Link icon at: www.morethanwork.net

Other Sources

The above information is by no means an exhaustive list of resources open to you. Further information can be found in the local press and jobs newspapers such as “Jobs Northwest”, which is published every Friday containing vacancies from across the region.

Local councils such as Liverpool City Council, Sefton Borough Council, Chester, Wirral MBC, Knowsley MBC, Halton, Ellesmere Port & Neston and St Helens MBC advertise both in the press, vacancy bulletins and on their web sites.

Finally, recruitment agencies and job banks can be useful for both temporary and graduate recruitment. Registering with dozens of agencies won't guarantee you a job. In fact, for the best results, it's better to register with just a few decent agencies. The Recruitment and Employment Confederation has an extensive of accredited recruitment agencies by either type of job or town.
